Car: 87 300SDL 120K 6cyl Turbo
Gonna replace my secondary (cannister-type) fuel filter soon. Any tricks to it? Air Bleeding, etc.? |

This is the 603 engine. Is there a hand pump? I didn't see one. Please advise.

Ther isn't a hand pump on your model. Just fill the filter with fresh fuel or transmission fluid before installing it. Crank the engine over until it cranks and let it run until it idles smoothly. Good luck.

On the 603 there is no hand pump. Fill the main filter up to the very top with fuel (or, as we do at the shop, a bottle of Red Line Diesel Catalyst) and install it, but be sure not to overtighten it! Crank the engine until it catches and immediately give it some gas. If it stalls, just crank it again until it starts and keep it at high idle for a few seconds. Even on the older models with the hand pump, if you fill the main filter up to the very top, you shouldn't have to prime it with the pump. I never do, and besides, those old pumps leak too often. Which reminds me, while you're in there, remove the old hand pump (the type that you have to loosen with a 22mm? wrench) and get a modified one from the dealer that doesn't have to be loosened to pump it. Those don't leak. BTW, replace the pre-filter as well. Adding transmission fluid to your fuel, lubricates the springs and plungers inside the injectors and injection pump. This will quiet down those noisy injectors and improve spray patterns. This was taught at MB tech school. And chances are most people are more likely to have a quart of ATF around the house than a can of diesel fuel. Convenience and preventative maintainance.

Make sure your filter isn't dented or dinged on the dome . I do not know if that's what happened to me but my filter(Hengst) split open going down the expressway. When I turned off the back tires were slick with diesel fuel and I spun 180 in the road.
