Faced with a problem of a slowly seizing wiper gearbox on an older car with the all metal cover secured with screws, I took a slightly different route to greasing it.

I drilled a hole in the housing at the base, and then squirted motorcycle chain lube into the gearbox, using the straw supplied with the spray can.

One stainless steel screw later, to plug up the hole, and it's been fine for over two years now. :-)

Anyone know what kind of wiper gearbox cover is on a 1993 300E 2.8 (4-door) ? I have run into the same problem w/ the wipers but can't seem to open the cover... I don't want to take the wiper assembly out completely to find out that the cover could have been popped out (as some threads have suggested).

I looked under the clamshell thing using a little mirror and found the 2 little holes (at 5 o'clock & 7 o'clock positions) but there is no screw at 6 o'clock position as found in the pics posted earlier here by zhandax. So I can rule out that this is not identical to the one in those pics. (so this doesn't look like it belongs to the 3-screw or 5-screw kind..:confused: ) I tried popping the cover off using alankeys etc in those holes but it wouldn't...I didn't want to put too much force to find out if it will pop off or should I?....does it need a lot of force if it were the pop out kind?

I'd appreciate any help here. There were some good short-cuts suggested by some here to get the lube through the drain holes or thru a newly drilled hole. I haven't gone that far yet. Would like to know if anyone here knows what kind of cover (wiper gearbox cover) is on a 1993 300E 2.8 4-DR

I think I'll try the "drill a small hole" method...

I opened my hood and checked to see if I could go "the easy, snap off the cover" method, but it looks as though mine is the "old time metal unit".

I'll try drilling a small hole and use the motorcycle chain lube and let you know how and if it works.

The last car (1989 260E) that I spent hours "getting everything right" on, some dumbhead rear-ended it and the insurance company totalled it!

I had a new furnace installed in my shop and in less than one year, the blower motor (with sealed bearings) started squealing...I drilled a small hole in the motor and forced in some 30 weight motor oil...it's still quiet after nearly 10 years...and the furnace man wanted to charge me $300 for a new motor!

My 94 e320 is out of service, waiting parts, so I decided to do the wiper rehab. Everything came apart rather easily. But while poking around looking for the hidden screws & bolts, I seperated the the rubber piece surrounding the wiper mechanism from the windshield trim rubber.

The gue looks like cauk. What should I use to "reattach" these two rubber pieces?

PS Gears look good, however the minimal grease remaining was all at the one edge of the gear. Hopefully, a good lube job will elimate its sluggish performance.

Although the gears below the wiper assembly looked very good, I went one step further and removed the cover connected to the motor. I presume you could call it the "transmission." One metal screw gear connected to the motor and one large white plastic gear connected to the linkage. All the grease was in two places; packed between the screw gear and its housing and embedded into the pockets of the bottom of the plastic gear.

The groves [that mesh with the metal screw gear] on the outside of the plastic gear are minimal. But not knowing how deep the groves are supposed to be, I cleaned, greased and reassembled. Wiper moves smoothly, has variable speed, but very slowly at intermittant setting.

The cover of the "transmission" contains three copper leads that contact a metal plate in the center of the gear. The nub on each lead is about 1 mm. How long should the the nub be? Should the contact plate be lubed? [Mine was coated with black grease].

Am I correct in assuming the white plastic gear in the "transmission" is virtually stripped and needs to be replaced?

Dupont's Krytox is also a excelent alternative to MB grease as they come with different viscosy and is very stable at all temperature, I use them for plastic to plastic parts, and also wiper tranny, but it is not cheap. Defenitly worth it. :)

Thanks for your instructions, but I can't get the steel wiper housing cover plate open on my 1993 300E. I have looked for the screws you mention, I don't see any. Any help is really appreciated.

The entire assembly is removed to access the screws. Hope this answers your question. If not be more specific and maybe I have better photo or instructions.
