w201 belt tensioner damper, which one?
Hi Everyone
I'm trying to figure out which belt tensioner damper to order since mine has gone south. There is four of them on fastlane and each one says something a bit different, naturally I want the correct one. I don't know how to read these numbers, I saw this earlier but I can't seem to find the post and a search didnt' help much eaither. My question is what are these numbers, and how do I read them? -10-020297 -12-064021 10-020298- 12-064022- car is an 85 190E 2.3 TIA xp

Those are the last 8 digets of yje cars chassis number by the old system of chassis numbers.
The first two digets tell you that it is left hand drive manual trans = 10 or a left hand drive automatic = 12. The rest of the number is the sequential number of production. These are the production cut-off points where a part was changed.

"...how did you know this part had gone bad?"
What usually happens with these things is not failure of the hydraulics, but disintegration of the rubber in the mounts, allowing the metal of the bushings to rattle arround making annoying sounds. Steve |

Visually a bad tensioner will be cocked at an angle. No angle is allowed, it should be perpendicular to its mount surface.

at low rpms the damper rattles like no tomorrow, once the car warms up it stops, but I read about this before, mine slowly started rattling now it's doing it all the time, this is why I'm changing it out.
