missing part? HELP

last oil change i saw these bits of what looked like black plastic in the filter canister receptacle that crumbled when i tried to grab them. i am doing another oil change and noticed that they were actually still there. is there a part missing here? is the spring next to the center outlet supposed to have some kind of cover? i had never looked that closely inside and just popped a new filter in everytime.

i also sprung a leak and i will attach another picture in the next post. i don't know if they are related. i am thinking the bypass was affected? oil pressure was always healthy and above 1.5 bar when hot.
