excellent to hear shes back running agian Alex, But it has to be play in the plate before you feel pressure,
why can't you adjust the mixture so the idle is 1000 RPM, but.. what pot did you put in the 86 I tried # 035 and mine would not idle right either , if you can't make it idle right put back 017 and try agian. check injector hoses for leaks and and that main one from the idle valve to the housing

I still haven't gone to sears to get the duty reader , my duty on the 16v is running rich i can smell it, but has much better top end.

good luck

Good to hear from you Dave,

You're right, the plate is now about 1/8 of an inch before pressure applies this seems to start much better. And I also thought about put the old 017 pot back. I got this 035 from Phill and it is in the A/F right now.

I can't seem to increase the idle RPM with mixture screw at all, and I had gone at least 4 revolutions at 1/4 rev interval on the mixture screw. But I'm happy that she's drivable so I can drive her to the new place.

I can't believe that KE injection system is such a complicated sun of a b.... Sorry but I get aggitated sometimes.

I will look into it some more, I just bought some new injectors see if this help. I will keep you posted.

Alex

My folks bought my 16 v in Germany in 1989, they kept it and never drove it much. in 2000 I bought it from them and since then I have replaced (you might want to sit down, this could take a while)

Condenser
timing chain tensioner ...etc
nito cells and shocks for sls
tie rods (left and right)
drag link
steering arm
front shocks
rebuilt auto trans (that hurt like a mother $$$$$)
steering box rebuilt
front sway bar bushings
new radiator
water pump
belt tensioner

to do list
full exhaust
injectors
valve bucket adj.
win powerball or lotto to pay for 16v upkeep.
convince fiancee that this really is worth it.
get my self to a 12 step program

I love this car. They will pry the steering wheel out of my cold dead hands before I give her up.

Welcome to the club David mash,

You've got it, it is a money pit but some how you got sucked in to do so. I hope it doesn't get to the point either the car or your fiance.

How is your car running? Do you need a timing chain replacement job yet. If you have to do this yourself and still have your fiance after then you are one hell of a guy or we may find your cold hands on the steering wheel of the 16v.

What other car out there that is compatible to the 16v any one know??? I can't thing of one even Mercedes too bad.

The time chain was replaced 4 years ago. I switched to Mobil 1 and I pop the valve cover ever 15k so check on the chain. So far the sprockets look clean and new. It has about 40k on it with the new chain.

The only car I can think of similar to the 16v is the late model M3's. I thought that is what MB designed the car to compete with anyway. I like the 16v better though. Does not look like a kit car the way the old M3 do. My 16v is my daily driver and I work long hours and live in TX with the nice warm summers so I usually have the work done on my car. I will do the basic stuff likeoil changes, plugs, injectors when t comes time. But I do not have the time nor the inclination to do the more time consuming stuff. Just had the steering box rebuilt. That owuld have been to much of a pain in the ass to do my self.

It runs great now. I need to have the valve buckets chimed and I need a new exhaust. It is rusted out. I am going to get the cat from German star and the res/muff from timevalve this fall. The car is due for inspection in Nov so it will be Oct probably. It's a never ending cycle with that lovely POS. And I say that in the most TLC kind of way.

Hey Davect,

It took me about 3 hours to put the old 017 pot back in the car, it is a bit better but still can't hold idle for ****. I had to use the stop screw to jack the idle up a bit so it won't die on me, it still does but less frequent. Right now the stop screw went pass the idle micro switch so this switch is not doing a thing, I know this is bad for the idle close loop, the ecu will never sees this car at idle, I know this will also cause big problem, when the weather is cold.

However, all and all, the 017 pot is the right stuff for this 16v, don't try the new bosch 035 pot, the 035 pot is a bit different if you look at the art work on the pc closely, not for 16v folks.

I have some new injectors that I plan to put them in at a later day.

Hey Davidmash, your car sounds very good and well care for, how many miles do you have on it, if you can afford the repair I think it is a good call life is too short.

hey Alex why 3 hours I could do mine in 5 min??

Did you get the pot back into spec you just can't slam it in there it won't idle/run right at all, I figured this out last mo. Once it adjusted to spec then you can fine tune mixture so it runns nice very very very little amount 1/16 turn then it should start/idle and drive great, unless someelse is wrong. low compression will make it idle terrible too though.

Hey David that a good start to the list, I would type mine in but,
it would take to long to write and read lol
We love 16v I went to look at one today to buy in CT, It was nice
one owner 100k but needs everything too.
It would be nice to have a parts 16v to scrap parts off of.

Hey Davect,

It took me 3 hours because I had to remove the whole A/F off. How in the world you do it in five minutes, the dawn pot is in a very wedgy area, even a stumby screw driver won't cut it, so did you use a chapman or something??? even with a chapman set you still have to grind it down shorter?? Any way if you said so then I believe you but would you mind share the secrets??

Speaking of spec to install the pot. What kind of specs? do you have them, I just eyeballed it and slaped it on there.

I still don't know how you can replace that pot in 5 minutes, but this is more power for you.

Happy 16v
Alex

haha

I just took off the distributer cap and unpluged the idle and fuel press hose so my hand could easliy get behind there and unscrewed the 4 screws,my god you took the whole A/f off
The POt rotates giving differnt voltage ,I posted it before here
Test pin one and two should be .2-.5v for thr 16v
it super fine adjustments to the pot, I left 3 loose and sorta tighted one so I could move it up and down still and when you find it . it will NOT move.
It is all really fine adjustment now to fine the right idle tricky stuff

Thanks Davect,

Thank you for the tip, I think it beats the removal of the whole A/f. Also thanks for the spec and how to align the pot, I will find out how it goes tomorrow. This is a great tip, you are my new hero and so did Tinker.

I also noticed today that the number two injector has some trace of leakage. Do you think this may effected why my compression on number two cylinder was low?? I was going to do a compression test on number two cylinder after I replaced the injector to find out if it made any difference, but I packed the dawn tester for the move, goes figure...

I will keep you posted, and thank you again.

Not much improvement

Hey Davect,

I alignned the pot today, the best I can put the pot position while monitoring test points 1 & 2 is 0.400mv. Does polarity matter? I had the negative on Tp 1 and positive on tp 2 and this is how I got 0.400mv. And 1 & 3 is 5.0v.

I spent about 2 hours messing around with the mixture screw, but still can't get the idle down to 1000rpm and stable. I guess I have to live with it at 1300 RPM. May be with the low compression on cylinder number 2 is giving me this headache.

One more thing, I have yet to do is replace the injectors and perhaps the idle control valve.

Alex
