I noticed this part because I recently found a part of black plastic panel hanging loose.

I looked underside about two months ago. Nothing was hanging loose.
I went to a shop one months ago for lubrication service.

But I have no evidence to decide who broke it.
It might be broken when the car went through uneven ground.

I still have mine on my 300SE (w126) after almost 200,000, and aside from a large hole in the center, it's doing fine. Although I am quite sick of removing it every time I change my oil.

Clean is good

I am amazed how clean my motor is at 10-years old. I owned the car for 8 years and I never cleaned the engine compartment, but it is really very clean in there. I think it must have something to do with that cover under the motor and I think keeping the engine clean must contribute to the longevity of these cars.

It is so clean in there

Anyone know if my car had a cover? I have not seen a part # or any listed in a parts chart. The car is a 1990 420SEL.

Dan, there is no need to crawl under your car to drain the oil. MB engines are
designed for suction (vacuum ) extraction through the dipstick tube.

Simple, you buy an extractor such as a Topsider, or a Mity-Vac unit.
Just do google search on oil extractor. I have had a Topsider for 7 years or so. You pump up the vacuum, insert the plastic tube down the dipstick, and then release the hose clamp. Oil is sucked into the container.

Encapsulation panels

<>

Actually, it doesn't. While I don't know when the encapsulation panels were added to 124's, I do know that my '85 190E (worst MB I ever owned) did not have one. BUT, when the AC "secret recall" update was performed on my car to improve the AC operation to "acceptable", one of the parts kits added was the encapsulation panels, bottom and sides under the engine plus at each side of the radiator. The purpose of all this was to prevent hot air from the radiator from flowing down and forward (at idle in traffic) to be drawn through the AC condensor again and instead insure that it exited back of the crossmember. That and all the other parts replacements brought the AC up to GM standards.

My '89 190E 2.6 had all this stuff factory installed, of course.

As to noise reduction, think of the last time you drove over the metal grating on a bridge and how much quieter the car was for the moment. That's because the engine sounds are normally reflecting off the pavement right into your ear. This would make a much bigger difference in a diesel, naturally.

My '01 C320's undershields are all snap-together and have never come loose. And, most of the car's belly is covered clear back to the rear axles which has a lot to do with it's drag coefficient of .27.

Bump in case anyone else had no idea that they are or may be missing this item from their undercarriage.

(And how in the world is one supposed to find information about something with names they've never encountered or could ever possibly associate with the part in question?)

Thank you Startek.com/epc!!

Undertray for sale

For Sale (I know this is not the classifieds section but this is obviously directly relevant to this thread.)

P/N 1245200123 EKT Engine Undertray. It came off my 1991 300E automatic.

These seem like they are hard to come by, and several of you have expressed the need for one, so how about $50 shipped within the US.

I know I have virtually no posts, but am an active member on the Porsche side if you want to check my user id out over there.

Paypal, money order, checks are all fine.

Contact me @ blackhawk625@hotmail.com

Thanks,

Justin

The concrete bumpers in malls etc are inclined to rip the front of these loose.
They then start dragging as you go down the road.
