Tranny slipping?
 

I have an 85 190 E 2.3 auto and just recently my car hasnt been going into gear right. I think the tranny is slipping but im not sure. Ive had the car for 2 years and never checked the transmission fluid until now and found out it was kind of low. I added some fluid and it still does the same thing. Can someone please tell me what is wrong with my car?

Can you describe the symtoms when you say tranny slipping. Is it not engaging in right gears, is it flarring, or is it not shifting smooth.
How many miles on the car.
In general it could be the vaccum leak causing the slip. I would suggest a tranny service, oil with filter change.

Its not engaging into the right gears. When its in park, I put it into drive to go and the engine just revs high and doesnt go into gear. So I have to keep reving it into it pops into gear. Also, once I get it into 1st gear, it shifts through the rest of the gears fine.

It has 130,000 miles on it and I dont know if the oil and filter was ever changed. Im going to do an oil and filter change and see if thats the problem and then go from there.

Also, what is flarring?

Couple of more questions for you.
How long before it engages into the gear, from P to N. Does it do the same from P to R. What if you do not push gas after engaging from P to D or P to R. Do you hear a clunk once it engages or thud once it is engaging.
I believe flaring is when your enginge revs up but car takes a little longer to pick up the speed, it can be fixed by Vaccumm moderator adjustment.

Ok its definately not flaring. It takes a while for it to go into gear and it does that in any gear even reverse. When I put it into drive or reverse without pushing the gas I wont hear any noise. If there is any noise, I think it would be a thud.

Also, I remember before all of this started that I would hear like something dragging when I would drive. It kind of sounds like when your brake pads rub, but it wasnt. I couldnt tell if the noise was coming from the front or the rear of the car.
