What is best to clean fuses?
Any recommended cleaning substances and utensils? Do I need to disconnect the battery for that?
Thanks,

Why? You're better off changing all the fuses every 10 years. For some reason this type of fuse deteriorates over time and small cracks form in the conductor. The fuse looks okay but it's not letting current flow. Pull it out and it falls apart in your hand.
At less than $5, it's cheap insurance. I think I replaced the fuses in my 3 126s for under $10. Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

Actually, at my indie they want 5.50 or so for a little box, I think 10 total.
I need to clarify the post. I would like to clean the connections in the fuse box as well, so the cleaned or new fuses make the best contact. The current posts look like very tarnished silver or tarnished copper. Thanks,

Check the prices at FastLane. Click the FastLane button above. 8 and 16 amp fuses are 13 cents each, 25 amp fuses are 16 cents each.
Try Caig Deoxit as a contact cleaner. Does a fabulous job of cleaning contacts. Probably cleans copper clad cookware too Fixes many power seat and power window problems with a spritz into the switch. I'll bet you'd like to hear from someone else for a change Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

After spending a few hours tracking down a problem to a cracked fuse in my car one day, I bought one of these:
Fuse kit upgrade from Mercedes Source. Much nicer than the factory OE. As I recall I wanted a few extra for spares and he threw them in. It looks like now the 124 kit has more fuses than when I bought them though. Probably find the same thing cheaper elsewhere too, but this guy's an enthusiast with good service. I bought the dash light upgrade kit from him too which was a nice mod.

sixto, where do you buy that contact cleaner, and is it safe for plastic?
I used a wire brush in my fuse box (battery disconnected ) without much effect... too hard to reach the contacts. My contacts were basically ok though.

Depending on how dirty the contacts are and how hard they are to reach, use any number of different methods to clean contacts.... wire brush, pieces of 400 to 600 Grit paper, an eraser works for light tarnish.

You should be able to get Caig Deoxit at any electrical supply place. It's not cheap. Something like $10 for little spray can the size of a whiteboard marker. It's safe for the plastic in MB cabin switches.
The 83 380SEL is nice in that both ends of the fuse holder are visible. Later models have one end buried in a pit. Maybe take a dremel to those is you want to clean them mechanically. Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |
