Chain Press for 96 C280 Timing Chain

Hi,

It is my understanding from Alldata that a special chain press must be used to install the timing chain on the 96 C280.

Is there another acceptable method of crimping and installing the chain without using the special chain press.

Thanks

Thanks Rick,

I am interested in Larry's approach but the relevant word he uses is "skilled" use of a ball peen hammer. Larry may know exactly how the crimp should look and how much clearance there should be. I may have a problem determining these factors, as this is the first time doing the timing chain replacement on this car.

Mac has a chain press tool, about $27.00. I wonder has anyone used this tool for this job.

Thanks
