OM606 timing chain question
I have just read some posts that I did on a search on M104 timing chains but found nothing on OM606 timing chains. Is there a recommended change interval. Also, I've been using Shell Rotella synthetic oil every 5,000 miles 'cause it's all Wal-Mart carries around here. Is it acceptable oil?

THERE really isn't any recommended replacement mileage for ANY timing chain. Inspection of chain stretch VS correct cam timing "should" be done any time that the valve cover is removed.
IE; every 60k to 75K miles. For that diesel engine you NEED a oil rated SH-SJ & CF-4(diesel rating) or higher!

On the OM606, change the oil/filter with good quality stuff often, and the chain should last for a very looong time. The 606 is not a high revving device and it's inline config means longer lived chains.
By 200,000 km's (125k-miles) you might want to watch it more carefully for stretch, but I would bet you're barely half-way through it's life at that point.

John, What do you use for oil in your E300? The Shell Rotella I use is a CH-4. I am assuming that the combustion rated oil (CH)nomenclature is sequential i.e CI>CH>CF so I should be OK with M.B.Doc's recommendation on oil?
