engine component ID guide?

(the usual, tried SEARCH, but no luck)..

Does anyone know of a source that would tell the average DIYer what everything in the engine compartment "is." I'm not talking about the obvious generic engine components common to most cars, but rather the specialized parts that are not so obvious. In other words, if I want to know what that little black box thingy over there is, how does one go about learning this?

I have the CDs for the vehicle, but I cannot find anything therein that acts like a "legend" to read the engine compartment.

Once you know, you know...but how do you learn it in the first place?

You can try the EPC available on CD. Check the parts forum archives.

You can also post a picture of your engine bay and point out what you want to identify.
