How long do OVP's last?
I ask because my car stalled after I filled it up at the gas station. It stalled as I came to a stop and again at the next intersection when stopped.
The car has 177,987 kms on it. M103 motor. The alternator was replaced 25,000 kms ago The plugs and wires are 30,000 kms old. The coil and distributor are original and look amazingly new... I am thinking OVP. The car has a very poor idle and will stall if not put into neutral at intersection. On a side note, will my water pump last longer if coolant is always kept fresh? It is also still original. Please offer anything you can. With much thanks, Mike McKinney

Mike:
I'm not able to answer your question, but mine is original - 12 yrs. old - 102,000 miles and still purring away. I really doubt that there's a clear answer to this question. How long does anything electrical last? My 2 cents. |

OVP failure almost always brings the ABS light up as well. Some OVPs were prone to early failure but you can repair them by opening up and resoldering all the joints inside.

I lost my OVP when I gave someone a jumpstart. Lesson learned: Never give anyone a jumpstart unless they plan on replacing your OVP.

Interesting....
My ABS light does not stay on.
Any other ideas about this stalling problem? The car will start up fine after it just stalled. Putting the gear selector in neutral will keep the car idling. Any ideas?

Try cleaning the throttle body bore where it meets the butterfly valve.

The throttle body plate at the butterfly valve is exceptionally clean. In Ontario, we have drive clean emissions testing and the car performed exceptionally well there as well. Low NOX.
I believe this stalling is now related to fuel pressure or supply more and more. What do you think I should have done? A. Go with a diagnostic service? B. Go ahead and replace fuel pump relay? I am thinking fuel pump relay more and more. Car hums when key is on... Car starts fine and will actually idle like silk. Coming to a stop causes it to stall. Fuel pump relay or throttle microswitch? Please advise guys. Thank you Mike McKinney
