Just bought a 83 300d turbo that has definite engine problems. 220k. Sounds like a lower engine knock off idle and has no power. I have rebuilt gas engines before but wonder if this is something I should tackle. Is replacement of the cyl. sleeves something that a machine shop has to do. What kind of cost should one expect using oem parts on a complete rebuild hoping that I don't have to replace the crank but have it reground? Thanks for your help.

bavincent,

If you're an engine man, you can do this one just like any other.

The sleeves are dry sleeves and are done by a machine shop. They bore to the OD of the sleeve and drive in the sleeve or something like that. They are not typically done for a typical engine overhaul. They are available in case something ruins a cylinder. In an engine overhaul, the cylinders are bored and oversized pistons are used.

The crankshaft is induction hardened and rarely needs turning at overhaul time. However, if you do have a serious bottom end problem, you may have to pay attention to the crankshaft.

The parts for overhaul are EXPENSIVE, however, if done right and maintained right, you will end up with an engine that will hang in there for many years to come.

Check with the PartsShop on this site to get an idea what it will cost for overhaul parts.

Good Luck,

The differences between gas and diesel motors mainly in the setting up of the pump. The mechanical issues are similar with the exception of the crankshaft.

As Larry points out it is surface hardened and will take special treatment if damage has been done to thr surface. The treatment is called Nitriding and involves heating and cooking the crank in a pile of nitride salts.

The other area of diference is in the oil cooling nozzles which direct a stream of oil into the crown of the piston from beneath. These have the be serviced properly. All info is in the engine manual or in the Body CD (engine manual section). In quire about any procedures you don't understand and leave it alone if you don't have the info.

As Larry points out; it is not necessary to replace the sleeves unless cylinder damage/wear isn't cleared by 0.5mm overbore used for the one repair size. We buy the oversize pistons send to machine shop and provide sleeves only in above cases and then we bore them right to the 0.5mm oversized piston.
