rebuilt transmissions
You could possibly try the following: Buy factory rebuild m/b from dealer, and have shipped from factory (or stock) to your transmissin man. Save substantialy on labor costs compared to m/b you will have to negotiate installation price and try for mechanics discount at dealer. God luck (worked for me) Abe G

I recently had my 740 IL trans rebuilt by a gentleman in Michigan. I and many others consider him an expert in both BMW and Mercedes transmissions.
This is how the rebuild process went: - Had a local shop remove my trans and convertor. - Snagged a used pallet from a local store who throws them out. - Used some rope to secure the trans to the pallet. - Kurt (@ European trans) had a carrier pick the trans up. Truck was an enclosed 18 wheeler type. (He pays for shipping to his shop...charged $125 to ship back from MI to NJ) - Replaced all wear items (ZF), repaired any damage, refilled with VERY expensive BMW specific trans fluid and dynoed the trans. It is very important to dyno the unit. This machinery and testing closely mimics driving conditions and can identify any issues before the unit is shipped back. - Unit came with a 2 year warranty..on parts & labor (he'll pay a shop to remove, ship, he fixes, ships back and pays to reinstall-within reasonable limits). He also is more than happy to provide telephone assistance to the customer or shop doing work. He's just a downright nice guy. I learned about Kurt through the Roadfly BMW E32 forum. Well the Mercedes dealer wanted $4300 plus tax (10%). I don't think so!
I have found a guy that used to work at the Mercedes dealership that opened his own shop at his house. He said he could rebuild it for $1100 plus parts. Probably less than $1600 for sure. I will let y'all know how it turns out.

When it rains it pours
Well, I picked up my car today and the total cost was $1415 with a 12 month 12000 mile warranty. Shifts great. He even installed the Mobil synthetic transmission oil. He replaced all the parts included in the master kit, the front band, rear brake, filter and oil. Couldn't have been better except for one problem.
The A/C doesn't work anymore!!! It was working fine when I dropped the car off. When I got in it to drive off, the compressor would not come on. I asked him if they removed any A/C lines and he said no. I took my knife and pushed in on the high side valve and no pressure. So, I drive the car to my shop (logging contractor - so I have a recovery machine and have worked on a/c systems on off road equipment) and pull a vacuum. It does not hold. So I charge the system up and pull out my leak detector. It picks up freon coming out the vents and under the a/c filter outside and also around the transmission. Strong freon odor inside the car. I recover the freon to keep it all from leaking out and here I am. Questions - Could replacing the transmission somehow cause a leak in one of the lines or the evaporator? Is it possible to reach the evaporator from under the car with a screwdriver or such? Could maybe jacking the car up wrong twist something to start a leak? This is all very strange. It was working and not leaking when I dropped it off. Now it is leaking bad. The man that repaired the transmission does not even work on air conditioners so I doubt he did it on purpose if he did it at all. He did say that if he messed something up to call him and he would pay to fix it. At that point we did not know it was a leak, thought maybe it was a wire loose or something causing the compressor not to come on. I am afraid it is the evaporator or one of the lines at the evaporator or the expansion valve. Anyway the whole dash will have to come out to check it - won't it? I guess all I need now to have a triple whammy is the engine to throw a rod!

talk about your dejavu
My 500E had the Evap core done last year...but due to an after market part, it still leaked.... $2500 kissed goodbye. My fault I supplied the part. Anway, now my Tranny just went out. Could replacing the Evap. Core have caused my Tranny to go out??:p
NNnnaaaaaahhhhhhh. I doubt it, but when the "new" guy does the tranny, I'm having him do the AC again... and since its been over a year, I'm doing it on the Warranty Company's dime AGAIN! righteous |

great transmission price
Has anyone had any dealings with Sun Valley Mercedes Dismantlers. They are offering me a great price on a trans for my w140. They include a 2 year warranty and a torque convertor. If anyone has purchased a rebuilt trans from them i would appreciate hearing about your experience,Thanks

I don't have any direct experience but I have heard they are very good. They have been around for quite sometime. You might want to ask for referrences ...... worth a try. Haasman

I got same problem with my 93 .300se.
last night I went to http://www.europeantransmissions.com/ to see what it would cost to get a rebuilt one. I checked out the tech help page and found out the I could fixed this by replacing large intermediate plate and gasket . I have ordered the parts and will let you know if this will do. you may want to look into it also. good luck.
