Display defective

97 e320 on instrument cluster has a message

Display defective and also a picture of a radiator between the two words.

What could be the problem?

Never seen the dash display on your model, but I would guess that would be the coolant temp sensor...

...does the owner's manual say anything about this? :confused:

It is in the manual , it means that the system is not operational, maybe it is why I can not drive the car anymore
