Please explain how to change serpentine belt on 1986 190D with 2.5 engine. Need to know how to release tensioner and properly tension new belt.

This is a sprin type tensioner, so once it is engauged, it is not adjustable. Just use a long extension to hold the plastic lever and take out the 13mm bolt and nut. Then release the lever, thus releasing the tension on the belt. You usually do have to take off the fan for this. And for that you will need a specail tool. (Short 8mm allen and pulley holder.)

Pay alot of attention to the routing of the belt before you remove, for I have seen many on wrong!!

I don't have the special tool he's talking about, but have alot of different type allens. If you want to bring it over this weekend, we can give it a shot if you like. Give me a call.
