Diagnostic "CARB" module

Is anyone aware if the diagnostic module (has a sticker that says "CARB") has any effect on engine performance? Or does the module just record faults for later retrieval?
Thanx in advance

Just A "spy" that watches the other computers. However when it sees a fault it can make a computer go into a "limp" mode.

It also tells the fuel computers to peform tests as well.

Thanks for the reply

I'm having an issue with my 600sel, and the removal of this module has (apparently at this point in time) let the engine management system settle down and work properly. Time will tell after I drive the car for a while.
