Help My car looses power and backfires??????

My car has recently been given me problems. When I am stopped at an intersection and then go sometimes the engine looses power then ruff idles and I can only go about 5 mph I turn the car off and on and it’s fine. When I press the gas peddle down pretty hard and it looses power and ruff idles . It also backfires sometimes. What could be the problem it is starting to get worse. \

It’s a 1995 C280

Do you know if the engine wiring harness has been replaced? They are all bad on C280's and E320's from 1993-1995.

In addition to the engine wiring harness, I would suspect the Mass Air Meter or the throttle actuator.

Backfire is fuel igniting in the exhaust, could be ignition related (when were the cap, rotor, and wires replaced, if ever?) or serious over-rich running followed by normal mixture.

The latter could be mass air flow sensor, temp sensors, or stuck fuel injectors.

Is the "backfire" coming out the exhaust or the intake? A check of the intake area (burnt/singed aircleaner or blown off hoses/tubes/etc) could yield some clues.
In the old days back-firing through the intake was usually a sign of bad valve/ignition timing or a lean condition.

Granted, the new cars are now heavily loaded with elec. gadgets, but the fundamentals are still the same. Either the timing chain has a mind of its own (not the case if it has spells of running "normal") or It thinks the plugs need to fire earlier than they should, or something is making it run lean.

Those are my two cents...I am curious to see what others think.

You know, I recall that I had a bad coil wire and experienced a lack of power and backfiring.

I just couldn't believe that a simple coil wire could cause that big of a problem.

I left it with a local independent Mercedes mechanic for a couple of days. He gave up and took the car to the nearest Mercedes dealer himself, and paid for the diagnostic work.

He paid the $90 himself, and sheepishly admitted that it was a bad coil wire.

He was looking for something difficult and missed one of the first things he should've checked....
