repair cracked frame

My 1089 420sel has a cracked frame right behind the front right wheel. I got an estimatre for $1400. My mechanic said it needed a part that costs $140.00. I want a second opinion. It had been fixed before and since the accident(girl hit right rear wheel and door. Could the accident have caused the mend to break? Thanks!

You say it was "welded" before????
Previous accident?
Who performed the repair weld?

There are alot of possible variables. Which part needs to be replaced at $140? Where is the crack in the frame? When the original fix was executed was a reinforcement added along with the weld?

A pic would surely help.

Additionally, when looking to make an extremely strong weld a TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) weld would be preferable over the typical MIG (Metal Inert Gas) weld done at many shops.

Good luck and feel free to PM with other questions.

What Rick and I are trying to help you with is ...correct me if I'm wrong, Rick.....is the weld procedure used for the original crack.

A lot of variables go into selecting the correct weld repair for framework damage. Given the metalurgical values of the steel used in various automotive frames, most weld failures occur because of the lack of proper weld processes and parameters used for the repair.
