I believe you can disconnect the compressor from the engine prior to removal, keeping it with the car. Haasman

Engine found
I found an engine with 135k on it, it has 160-165 compression across all 4 cylinders. It comes with just about everything attached.. manifolds, fuel distributer..etc. They want $1000 which includes shipping. This would fit my current budget, then I figured i would get a few new hoses, plugs, and motor mounts.
Do you guys think I should get this, or is this too high of mileage? The compression readings sound pretty good. So I figured I wouldnt even mess with anything , just put her in and go. I want to make a purchase the earlier part of this week so I can get started soon. |

You need to know if the head has been off and done. This would be a good deciding factor.

The price for the extra parts (manifolds, distributor etc.) would easily exceed $1000 if you had to go buy them seperately. If the engine is healthy this is a GOOD deal! Freestyler

They dont know if there has ever been work done on the head. But with the compression readings the way they are, I think I would just leave the whole thing intact and not even fool with it.
Would this be anyone elses approach, or am I being foolish for not taking the head off? |

Buy it. Install it.
Someday, when you have lots of spare time & cash, you can build-up your own engine the way you like it. $ 1000.00 doesn't buy much these days anymore.

radiator question
I am trying to remove some stuff out of the way today, so that it will be easier to get the engine out later. I have removed the radiator closest to the engine, fine. But now there is another radiator which is right behind the electric fan. There are some connections there that look like they may me in with the airconditioning system somehow.
Anyway my question is do I need to take out this other radiator in order to get the engine out, or can this one stay in? If I need to get it out, are these connections going to the A/C lines at all, or am I mis-stating what these connections are for? The haynes manual doesnt talk about this other radiator, just the first one, which was hooked up to the trans. As always, Thankyou very much for all the help! Couldnt do this without you guys! Josh |

Josh,
Take out the radiator before you even think about moving the engine. One slip and you have put a very expensive hole in the radiator. Take everything else off the front of the engine. It just makes it easier to manuver. You are going to have to take the engine out regardless of what you end up doing. With the engine out it might be worth your while to drag it to a machine shop and just ask the mechanic's opinion. He might be able to hone the cylinder and put in a new piston for considerably less than $1,000. If you can get the oil pan off w/o removing the engine, which I doubt, this work can be done with the engine in the car. I have done this on American V-8s but I doubt that there is that much room in a MB, although with it being a 4 cyl. you might have the room. |

The "second" radiator is the AC condenser. It would be best to leave it intact. See if you can avoid breaking the AC lines. It will save you $ because of the cost of evacuating the system and the R12. Haasman

gaskets and such....
Sorry if I am getting annoying but , could anyone tell me what items i will need to get as I replace the engine. I want to place an order tommorrow. I am putting together a list and have the following so far.
- oil filter - sparkplugs - 2 coolant hoses- they are beat - expansion tank cap - also beat - 2 motor mounts - tranny filter- figured i could do while its out of the car - tranny pan gasket I know i will need a filter for where the tranny and engine meet. Is this called a bell housing gasket? What other gaskets or items will need to be replaced when putting in the new motor? I dont want to get stuck without the appropriate parts when i am installing. You are not annoying anybody here. We're going to see this thing through to the end. Don't forget fluids, i.e. engine oil, coolant, transm. fluid. I'm sure other will join with suggestions shortly.

You would want to check the engine belt and its adjuster/tensioner while it is out of the car.
Check the cap, wires and rotor .... the air filter ....maybe your's are newer and better? Check the steering play- at center does it have alot of freeplay? This would also be a perfect (and easy) time to adjust if necessary. Haasman
