Removing Steering Lock - 190E

Hi,

I have an 87 190E and I'm trying to replace the steering lock. Can someone tell me how to remove it. I guess a large part of the dashboard has to come off?

Cheers,
Neil

What's most important to know is if the key will presently turn in the lock cylinder. It becomes quite a task if the key won't turn, still not very easy even if it will, but if it won't, it's a bear of a job.

Hi,

I've already removed the lock barrel. We've been using the car for a few months now using a screwdriver to turn the ignition switch. Now I've got to replace the lock unit. I have a new key. barrel and lock unit. The Car was stolen and a screwdriver forced into the lock so eventually the part that activates the switch disintegrated. I removed the barrel completely using a bit of welding rod.

Cheers,
Neil

There is a clamp that helps hold the steering lock to the steering column (jacket tube). Remove the clamp (remove the bolt and slide the clamp out of the way). Then turn the ignition lock with your screwdriver 1 click clockwise (positon 1). Under where the clamp is there is a small metal button. You can now push in on this button and pull the lock out of the jacket tube. You can't push the small button in without the lock in that position 1, which is why it's so much harder if the key is seized.
You may need to just remove the trim on the bottom side of the steering wheel side of the dash, then pull the dash out a bit (towards the driver) to get the lock to slide out from the jacket tube enough to remove it.

Gilly,

Thanks for the advice I'll give that a go. I saw that clamp but couldn't see how to remove it I guess there are bolts on top. Will have another look-see tonight.

Cheers,
Neil

You'll have a better time of it if you can remove the instrument cluster. Do you know how to do that? If not, do a search for the info, it gets discussed alot.

1).Remove instrument cluster.
2) two large bolt heads will be right in front of you at bottom of instr. cluster dash "hole", securing the steering column. Loosen them substantially, but don't remove them.
3) steering column can drop a little and access to the bolt and nut, holding the clamp, is improved.

Hi all,

Thanks for the tips I changed the steering lock today. I did find however that it is necessary to remove the steering wheel on my model which is an 87 - pre Taxi style dash in the UK at least. I think US cars had this dash 86+. It's necessary to remove the steering wheel so you can remove the column cowling behind the wheel otherwise it's impossible to access the clamp nut.

A little trick for removing the steering wheel is to turn the wheels as far left as possible and use an extension bar on the end of a 10mm allen key to loosen the bolt. Turn the wheel the opposite way before tightening.

Cheers,
Neil
