CASH will be mailed to the person w/ the cure:

This thread may not have an answer, but since we're always here complaining, pissed-off and griping, maybe someone can answer the following problem (which is on a lighter note):

I have put my heart and soul into my new C Class Sedan. I hooked it up by adding the AMG style package to it (wider M3-like tires) some rims and a few other gadgets here and there.

How do you stop people from "challenging" you on the highway, per se. I hope this doesn't sound arrogant, but I'm tired of riding on the interstate, enjoying my beautiful car, only to have some buster in his beat-up ride pull-up beside me, stare me and my ride down, only to speed off as if he accomplished something great by smoking me. And I'm not even racing, just cruising along the highway. It's like people feel like they made a great accomplishment and compensated for their crap car by smoking a Benzo. Despite you looking at them like they're crazy and not even increasing your speed at all.

Does this type of occurence happen to anyone else and if so, how do you uaually deal with it?

TX76513 06-30-2003 01:07 PM

Hmmm

I could send you a "turbodiesel" badge for the rear-end???

MikeTangas 06-30-2003 01:08 PM

You simply ignore it. You can't change what the other idiot wants to do, so let him do it and just ignore it.

manny 06-30-2003 01:13 PM

Buy an old police uniform, even just the hat should do it. :D

tunk 06-30-2003 01:14 PM

yup

it happens to me on the bike ALL THE TIME... like I couldn't smoke any cage out there if I wanted to. How do I deal with it? I think about what my insurance rate would be if I took the bait and grabbed the throttle every time some loser had a bad day. That usually keeps me pretty cool. Think about the tickets or the accidents or the insurance or just how dumb I would have to be to even consider takin the bait. The warm weather drives people a little nutty, I have noticed a lot more of this behavior over the past week here in New England. Do not take the bait.

Years back I was idling one day at the light in my 16V, and a old Volvo 244 pulled up beside me. He roared away in a cloud of blue smoke (oil, not tire) while I just eased 'er through the gears, not in a hurry.

At the next light, he motioned for me to roll my window down. He grinned "I beat you! I beat you!"

I simply replied "Yes, this is true, but I'm driving a Mercedes-Benz and you're still just driving a POS old Volvo." I zipped the window up and eased away when the light turned green. He made a quick right, and was still yapping at me about something, but it was obvious that I had truly won the contest.

You might change your thinking. Ignore them. Stop using the term "Benzo" and talk about "Mercedes-Benz." Make sure that even when driving fast, you drive in a superbly smooth and competent manner so not to attract squid attention.

Dang John, now you're implying he's trolling for sailors. ;) :) :D

Or is "squid" a locally affectionate term for my chosen profession?

blackmercedes 06-30-2003 01:28 PM

Sorry Mike, but "Heat Score" is the slang for the po-lice attraction factor.

Squid is a combo word. Squirrels dart from place to place, always moving fast, often getting run over by other stuff. Kids are young. Sq-uid is a darty driver looking to have a contest of speed with anyone in the vicinity. Always, watery-type squids also move a darty mannner, so it works well with that interpretation too. Bikers often refer to young bullet bike riders in their tees and sandals riding at 99% of their ability ALL the time as "squids."

It is not a compliment.

My 911 Turbo was a Heat Score. I spent more time parked in front of Rollers with that car than I ever did actually being above the speed limit. Also, you want to talk about Squid Magnet? Cripes! Every punk with any type of car he thought faster than a bicycle wanted to have at it. Rarely did I participate. I looked for "peers." I once gave the taillight-look to a Supra Turbo, for example.

My dream cart would be a W211 E55-Kompressor without the AMG body add-ons and a turbo-diesel trunk badge.

The comments about motorcycles are TOO TRUE. Leave me the hell alone.

Got it John. I'll keep that one in my handy mental dictionary/thesaurus. Might even try to find a use for it today, hehehe ;).

Oh my

[Beavis and Butthead Voice] John is like....ummmmm....the man! [/Beavis and Butthead Voice]

My own observation around these here parts--the characteristics one might consider "Heat Score" and those attracting Squid attention seem to be pretty similar as a general rule. The AMG mods look great, but my banker's-anthracite-gray dead-stock look feels even better as I note how little attention it draws from either squids OR gendarmes. Besides, the gray goes with my early-50's hair and mustache....

Re: CASH will be mailed to the person w/ the cure:

Happens to me a lot to sometimes. I am careful though.. all I do is take off for like 15 seconds and my car is like 50 yards in front of theirs...then just slow down.. you just proved that your car kicks ....

:P

Anyways don't go around challanging them... all they did anyways was get some sound fx going to make thier car sound fast so who cares..

haasman 07-01-2003 02:35 AM

Get a Police Badge and when they chalenge you, roll down your window and flash it.

Think of it as the sincerest way they can apprecation your mods.

OR you could return the car to stock and see if the problem goes away ;)
