Benzmac or anyone else who might know:
Benzmac mentioned a tool called FLX-13 from Snap-on that greatly facilitates replacement of the water pump on 300E. I'm getting ready to do this again (last time about 80,000 miles ago, seemed like a big job using the manual). What type of tool is it, some sort of flex joint? I have a good, pretty extensive set of tools, but not sure whether I have something similar or whether I could get one ------------------ Bob Johnston 87 300E |

Snap On FLXM13 is the best tool for early 103

I appreciate the confirmation/correction on the Snap-on number. I called Toolsource, they said they can't get Snap-on but an SK tool called a flexible 13 mm socket may be similar? Is the FLXM13 a socket or allen driver? A description would be helpful. Thanks

NO!! Snap on is the only one!! I have broken all of the others. It is a 13mm ball swivel with a 1/4" drive shank and a 3/8's driver. It is the only tool that will flex enough to do the job. It will turn a 5 hour job into a 2 hour (if you take lunch inbetween) job.

Thanks Benzmac. I was able to contact the local Snap-on guy and one is on the way, should come the same time as the water pump from the PartsShop. I'll let you know how it goes.

Could someone shed some light ( bright please) on the proceedure and tools needed to do the water pump on a 104 engine (24 valve) 1992 CIS? injection. Do I need to invest in the Snap on tool or am I stuck trying to get my ex wife's hand in there? LOL
This looks impossible. I can see one bolt thru a mirror and flashlight. The bottom bolt should be accessible with the proper hex key socket lengths and a wobble. The top one is a killer. I can only see it with a flashlight. It is a good possibility that it is not a water pump bolt as it appears to be under the #1 intake runner but does have the same size and markings as the other bolt. There is a pink bolt that looks like it is holding a engine cover in place. Please help!!! I need to get this puppy on the roads and I am not willing to go ask my local tech to borrow his tools so I will have to order some. Maybe we could get someone ( hint hint ) to address the problems of DYI's and offer specialty tools that you only need to use once. Just think a water pump, instructions and all the tools you need to do the job. Just return the tools prepaid and they credited back to your credit card. They would make their money on increased sales and a different market group. Ones that want to work on thier own but find it cheaper to find an after hours tech to do it for you. This is due to the out lay for the tools.A very good reason to let someone else do it while you go play golf. Moose. <-- denied golf until this car burns gas again

I saw the thread but the instructions have you disassembleing the PS pump (remove the 4 bolts from front of pump???) and says to use a hey key L wrench. This is not an option . I assume that you use this snap on tool and a 6MM hex key socket on the end?
someone let me know what is what here ? Moose

I've got my water pump loose and all screws are off. But I can't roll the pump out like benzmac stated. I have the belt pulley off. The tension screw bracket is in the way. Does anyone know if it has to come off also. Help.

Just a follow up to help others using the FLX-13 water pump method
I did get the pump out eventually. I took out the air filter housing, the first bottom left intake manifold bolt, the belt pulley and cut the small water hose completly off. The FLX 13 tool is a life saver if all the bolts are 13mm Hex heads. I did have to grind down part of the new Graf water pump bolt because it protruded further out then the OEM pump(one of the 4 small bolts on the back part of the pump).
Getting the pump out takes some work. I started to think it wouldn't come out. It's so tight, the back part of the pump cut a small grove in my intake manifold. It comes out and goes in like a puzzle. Be careful of the wire going to the timing mark. It got pinched and was really in the way during the install. It kept falling behind the pump, keeping it from mounting flush. Getting to the bottom front bolt gave me some trouble, because you can't see it. The bolt you can see on the bottem is not it, it's above it just out of site. I was trying to undo the wrong bolt for a while, till I realized it wasn't the right bolt. Getting the front bottom bolt back in takes some skill, because if you drop it in that area you have to take the pump back out to fetch the bolt. I put some grease in the end of the FLX tool to help hold the bolt while I lined it up to thread it. Also yank up and down on your serp. belt. If you hear squeaking you may need a new belt tensioner. Mine started lightly chirping after I finished the install, but I'm going to live with it for now.

13mm Flex Socket Craftsman
I recently did my water pump over the holidays and picked up a 13mm flex @ Sears for about 8.99 worked great and reduced the swear words to about 15%.
