HELP!! A/C blower went out today!! Its hot!!
85 degree heat outside, so guys - help me out here.
The car is 93 500SEL (w140, m119) Last time I drove the car everything was working fine, A/C and blower was working. This morning I started the car, set the temp and got zero response from the blowers - they are totally dead in all modes (defrost, cool, EC), nothing, ZIPPO. I just hear a relay or something clicking unde the passenger kick panel (or near there) everytime I turn on the A/C. I know the a/c is fine because when I drive fast I get this residual air flow (only barely noticeable when I put my hand to the vents). I checked the fuses they all look fine, but I can't find any relays. Where do I look? I am cooking here... |

If you are sure that AC is working but no air in the vents, it could be your blower motor. It is located under the glove compartment in W126, hopefully it would be the same place for your car. Since it is clicking, it could be the worn brushes on the motor.
Good luck and stay cool.

In a 140 it's behind the engine in the engine bay. Takes some doing to take it out or so it seems.
You checked the fuse but have you REPLACED the fuse? Sometimes they look fine but have a hairline crack. More common on the old ceramic fuses than the new plastic fuses. Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

No, a 140 is super easy to get to the blower, it's under the air intake cowl behind the engine, but not in the center like I think Sixto is thinking, it's over on the passenger side. There are about 6 large phillips screws holding the panel down and you're "there".
Do a search, the *usual* problem is the blower motor regulator, it's held down to the blower motor by 2 screws, but it's real pricey, surprisingly pricey for such a small part. I've also seen this problem caused by a faulty ignition switch on a 140. For the price of the parts involved (motors, regulators, ignition switches) it would pay to have an experience 140 mechanic look it over. By my estimation though "8 times out of 10" it's the regulator, but I'd still want to test it. At least uncover the motor, disconnect the regulator, and give the fan motor 12 volts and see if the motor at least is capable of working, then you know it's not the motor, it's either the regulator or something "upstream" of the regulator. MB has published a test procedure specifically for this problem, I don't have it though, not here. Stevebfl or Dr Diesel probably does, doesn't seem like it was all that involved. Gilly |

Ordered blower regulator, will see if that cures it. |

i have found the blowerfans also have a fuseable link which is a very thin metal strip...these are not in fuse box but in a separate small black box with two screws..one one eac end..actually there is a little door you can open between the 2 screws and view that metal link...sounds like the problem....it was with my 300se and 400e.

I looked at your profile, it looks like you have 124's and a 126. The setup on the 140 chassis is a bit different, but you're right, on a 124 or 126, etc, check the strip fuse first.

Replacing blower motor/ blower regulator
I am the new owner of a 94 S500 sedan. Our blower and/or blower regulator went out also just like Arthur2k as mentioned above. I dug in as recommended on these posts, but had a couple questions.
As I was removing the red wire from the blower motor, the spade connector plastic cover slipped back on the wire and I accidentally dropped it against the blower housing. It was the fouth of July early, sparks galore. Does anyone have any commentary on whether I might have blown somthing. Is the only fuse for this blower located in the main fuse box or are there others also. Secondly, should the squirl cage turn fairly freely? I am trying to decide if the bearings in the motor are really dragging or are the brushes just that tight. I really have to push the cage with my finger tips to move it at all. Thanks in advance! |
