Ignition tumbler removal
 

I did a search on removing an ignition tumbler on a 94 C280 and I am still not fully clear on how the tumbler 'comes out' and the new one is installed. If anyone could clarify this procedure I would be greatful.

Has know one replaced their ignition tumbler and cover on a W202?

I'm sure someone has, but it has only been a couple hours since your first post. Remember not everyone "lives" right here 24/7, most of them have traditional jobs with traditional hours.

I can't see the 202 being that much different than any of the other models.

Having access to the forum exclusively during the day while at work, somtimes its easy to forget that allot of posting goes on 'after hours'. My A-type personality doesn't help either.

I looked through the archives but wasn't able to dig up any ignition tumbler changes for the W202. I'm sure someone has done one, but it just might take a bit before they find this question. Be patient, I have faith you'll get an answer.

I haven't done one on a W202. I recently did the one on my W124. Anyone know if they're similar? The 124 is pretty simple to do.

This link at Performance Products suggests the iginition lock cover removal tool is common to all models. The actual process for removing the lock after the cover is off has been described on this board many times.

You may like to call the vendor, albeit with one caution. Many comments here suggests they are very careless and frequently ship the wrong parts, so be careful and check first that they have it in stock.

I bought my tumbler at the dealer. It wasn't as inexpensive as Fast Lane, but they were able to order it matched to my existing key.

To remove mine, I followed the instructions posted here, but I used a wire hanger instead of the special tool. If you go the wire hanger route, be sure to file the end at an angle similar to the real tool. (Someone posted an illustration.) Otherwise you'll never get it. It took me about 10 minutes of cursing to get it out, but once you do the rest is easy. You can start the car with a screwdriver if need be while you're waiting for parts.

I did the tumbler on my w201 and it took me a long time to get the sucker out. I only needed to use the wire in one of the two holes since only one had the spring, I also figured out a way to easily steal an mb when I did this, well older models at least like mine, once you get past the door locks :)
