85 300TD Turbo (260k):

Rotor Renewal Questions:
Is it necessary to replace the two bolts that secure the caliper with new ones once the origonal have been removed? Part #?

Is it necessary to replace the pads even though they have significant life left? New rotor new pads?

Power Steering Filter Question:
Should this be changed? Should this be done if/when the system is flushed/bled? How necessary is it?

Thank you for your time,
Alec.

Question 1: Not necessary to replace caliper retainer bolts, but not a bad idea if you're doing major work. Those bolts, if I remember correctly, are coated with a lock compound and probably be reused once or twice. Don't know part #, but any local Benz dealer should have them.

Question 2: Replace the pads. They are broken in to the old rotors and may not seat fully on the new rotors without you doing some driving. You may get uneven brake performance. May even get noisy. They aren't really that expensive and worth the $$ since you've already got the rotors off.

P/S question. Change the filter, if you have one. Why would you be flushing or bleeding. I am not aware of any bleeding procedure for power steering. Maybe someone else has that answer for you. Good luck..

Jeff, thanks for the rotor reply.

I am not sure of the best method for changing the P/S pump filter. It appears to be submerged in fluid. I cannot find a protocol for replacing it. Stick my hand in and pull it out?

Thanks again.
Alec.

I have flushed the power steering system by removing the lines. Benzmac informed us, when I related that to someone, that there is a plug on the underside of the steering box. Drain it using the plug, replace the filter, then refill. Turn the steering wheel lock to lock, with the engine running to bleed. Then, of course, refill, bleed, refill, bleed, until the level no longer goes down after turning the wheel lock to lock.

Good luck,

Hey Alec!

I usually use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull out the filter, there are a couple of holes on the top, or you can use a hook of some kind.

As for changing the fluid, I suck it out with 'turkey baster', just don't stick it back in the kitchen when you are done it.
