Hi all,
My 91 190e 2.6 has 131K and I've had it for about 2.5 months. For the last ten years I've always had long commutes to work (20-40 miles one-way). Starting July 1st, I will (literally) walk across the street to work. I know nothing about owning a car that will basically become a weekend driver. Should I take the car out on the highway a few times a week? Should I let it sit the whole week and just use it on the weekends? I'd like to keep the car for a while, so I would appreciate advice on what is best for the car. Thanks, Rick |
Change the oil a little more often. As long as when you do drive it you go for some distance, you will be fine. Change the brake fluid and coolant before sitting.

To build upon what Benzmac said, you should go to a calendar based maintenance plan, not mileage based. Oil change 4 times a year, heavy maintenace once a year regardless of mileage. Drivng a car only once a week is fine. The key t to get it fully warmed up when you do drive it so all moisture in the crankcase "gets boiled off and all moisture in the exhaust gets purged. Also get a back door and enclosed parking so your boss will not know when you play hooky!

Thanks to both of you for the quick replies. I've maintained this car very well since I got it. I found a good MB independent shop and go there for everything (including oil changes) so they know my car. Over the last six weeks I've had all of the fluids changed and put in a new fuel filter. I guess I should be set then. Thanks again,
Rick |
