Benzmac:
Since you mentioned precats rattling in the "Zinging" post below, it occured to me to ask - do you think the precats are still doing anything useful in my 86 300E (190000km) - or are they just providing that much more restriction? I've read several times that "gutting" these is worthwhile - is it? Thanks, Nick |
I have an 87' 300E with 330,000km on it. I had the exhaust manifolds off and the pre cats were gutted. At first I thought it was great but then I noticed that they were upstream of the o2 sensor. Benzmac, does the computer require these cats to be working properly for a proper fuel map? Thanks.

They did help the O2 to come online quicker because they build up so much heat. They are gutted on my old car too. If the cars burns any oil, they will clog up fast. They have been done away with on the later 300E with the same main cat.

Does one remove the catalytic converter or just gut the inside and put it back into place? My 91' 190 is rattling underneath when the engine is revved and my mechanic said they are expensive to replace so I thought I might just do away with it.

Thanks for he reply! I would really appreciate some brief instructions re how to gut these things, i.e., what tools to use, etc. Thanks again, Nick |
I have done it to my personal driver, but not ever to a cust. car. I hope you understand I can't tell you how to destruct the emmissions system on your car. :)

I have just removed the pre cat and the
cat from my 88 190E since it was partially clogged. The car now is even worst. The car is hesitate to go, look like to mixture is too rich and the idleling is rough as well. What could be wrong ? Do I need to retune the CO and HC again ? The car run fine if I disconnect the O2 sensor wire under the seat but I feel is is less power at high speed. (Probrary it is running lean). your help will be appreciated. Thanks |
Get a new o2 sensor and have lambda checked.

It's obvious that Benzmac is not in a big hurry to see what the inside of a Federal prison looks like. Can't say that I blame him.

Thanks Benzmac, BTW, May I know what is
the purpose of the O2 sensor and Will it cause any harm to the car if I disconnect it permenantly. ? p/s, Mr Larry, my country have not enforce the catalytic requirement and it is damp expensive to replace over here. |
