1990 124, 2.6

I was thinking about buying a new engine for my daughters car as a project while she is at college and wondered if there was any reason why I should not put in the full rated 124 engine.

Also if you have any suggestions on sources for the engine I would be gratefull.

if the 2.6L is sufficient....seems like it would be easiest to rebuild the 2.6 no mis-matches like...tranny, motor mounts, elec, etc....

2.6 v 3

I know but since this has got her safely from 16 to 18, and the next time she really uses it will be 20 and she LOVES the car, I would give her a power boost.

I never drove this mark when it was new so I do not know what the power was before the miles were put on it, so the 3 seemed a logical way to go.

It's typically cheaper to buy a whole car than to swap engines. You can upgrade the whole car to a 300E for less than the cost of changing the engine and have something that will hold its value better. Plus your daughter will just love the headlight wipers :)
