126 Hood Star Removal
I just received my Avant Gard grill from Matrix Car in Germany for my 560-SEL. I'm like a kid at Christmas and can't wait to install it. I have removed the hood star from my CLK and for the life of me can't remember how ( early stages of alzheimers, perhaps). Can someone give me a tip as to how to remove it on the 126.

This is kind of a PITA, especially of the grille is still on the car. When the star is installed, you turn them metal piece on the outside of the spring and it snaps in. So you'll have to get a good sized pair of pliers and pull down on that metal piece and turn it. The wide ends should point towards the front and back of the car. There are little grooves that that metal piece fits in...make sure you get it in there or else you won't be able to get it out. It's kind of hard to explain...but good luck!

Maybe different words to describe the same process. Look at the bottom of the hood star. There's a slotted metal plate that slides into slots in the part of the star that extends below the grille. Kinda like how the key lock is held to the gas filler flap of an older Toyota. Use needle nose pliers to pull the plate away from the star. That should free the star.

The grill is the standard 126 grill with 7 horizontal bars instead of the stock 3. It is similar to the s600 grill and is available for the 124's as an aftermarket item but I had never seen one for the 126. I couldn't sleep until I was able to find one and am happier than a cat with catnip now that I have.
