oil filter removal tool for '91 300E?
 

Hi,

I just did my first oil change on my '91 300E - topsider rocks! :)

Anyways, I could not loosen the oil filter with my hands .... I bought this filter removal tool at Autozone and managed to remove the oil filter .... however, I do not like this tool .....

When I installed the new oil filter (bought at Mercedes dealership), I tightened it with my hands .....

* Is there a better tool to tighten the oil filter?

* What is the best place to buy oil filters? (costs $14.70 at the dealership).

Oil filter wrenches are typically for removing filters. They usually go on as tight as you can get them by hand. It's something like 3/4 to a full turn after the seal meets the contact surface. No more than that unless you read the Jiffy Lube training manual. So, no, there is no better tool for tightening this type of filter than your hands.

To be honest, I don't think the W126 CD manual comes with maintenance procedures as the W124 CD manual does. It could be that there's a torque spec on oil filters. I'll leave that for someone to contribute. FWIW, I don't think more than 5% of the folks on this forum tightens this type of oil filter to a torque spec if there is one.

There is a special tool for removing most MB filters, it will certainly work on yours. P/N 103 589 02 09. Do not use it for tightening the cannister type filter, as sixto says, hand tight is quite enough.

If you have the 24 valve engine you need this to replace the cover after the filter element is changed. There is a description of this in the DIY pages of this website. Observe the tightening torque marked on the cover - 2.5Nm only.

MB changed oil filter suppliers around 10 months ago to a smaller
compact style that uses a different style removal cap.
This only applies to the metal canister filters for the M102/103
motors. This is PN# 103 589 03 09 00.
The older (and cheaper) 103 589 02 09 cap will still work on all
the 88' to current cars that use the plastic cap with replaceable
filter insert. (except diesels of course!);)

an adjustable wrench you can use on different types of oil filters. It looks like three or four fingers grabbing the top of the filter.

Just remember to oil the rubber gasket before hand-tightening.

I have a wide array of oil filter wrenches.
Strap-type, band-type, pliers-type, cap-type...
The best one depends upon the access situation.

Whenever it will fit, my favorite one to use is the one pictured below from Lisle Corp. It uses a 3/8 drive, so various extensions can be used as needed. It has provided years of hard service without complaint. Does not work without decent access to the filter end, however.
