Say...I got this great buy on synthetic 5W-50 motor oil. I had assumed it was a truly all weather oil but I'd like to know the temperature range. Can anyone tell me?

I'm planning a trip down to Las Vegas and would like the best protection possible (for my car that is).

Let me guess... Castrol from Price Club/Costco?

Okay, so I did an archive search on the subject...and am no wiser still. Seems there is a controvesy about running oil with that wide of a temperature range (whatever that is). To throw the proverbial monkey wrench...I'll be doing a little racing down in Vegas so now I'm worried that I have the wrong oil viscosity. You racers out there: what should I use????

Based on research and comparison between the various synthetic oils' test results on ASTM standardized tests I picked RedLine. I run 10-40W. Everything is a compromise. Pick your oil based on those test categories that are important to you. I felt redline the best compromise.

I am an advocate of synthitic oil. I have never heard of anything bad about the wide ranges. I would feel more comfortable if you were talking about Mobil 1, however.

Synthetic is just better oil molecules that take longer to break down. Even the heavier weight, 5W-50, is not that "heavy" as compared to regular 10W-40. In Vegas, temperatures in excess of 100F, you absolutely want something that is more prudent in warmer climates.

My manual recommends 20W-50 for those high temperatures. I'd recommend Mobil 1. Don't look for cheap deal when buying oil for your Benz. Cheap deals usually compromises longevity.

Just my 2 cents.
