Your friend should go for a later model S500.Stay away from the W140 SEL's.The W126 is also a great car.I owned a 1988 560SEL and I regret selling it.The S500's are great cars,if your friend is not to far,and if he was interested,he could make me an offer on my 1998 S500 (Obsidian Black over Beige)102,000miles.Email me at Snp8990@yahoo.com if your interested.

The original post was 3 years old. I doubt that the original question is no longer an issue, but perhaps may help someone else trying to currently decide.
Still strange that a 3 year old topic brought back up with a question that has nothing to do with the topic. Oh well! |

yea quite interesting indeed.
my friend initially bought a 88 560sel at that time when I had posted. He then later on sold that and got a 99 S500. While he liked driving both, and he does own a lexus LS400 and 740IL, he claimed that the mercedes was quite boring to drive at it didnt have the kind of "kick" the lexus and bimmer provide with yet lesser engines than the s500. oh and ofcourse not to mention the gazillion trips he had to make to the mercedes service dealer trying to keep the S500 in running condition. and while he did, and it snows in NJ, keeping the beast going straight in snow was yet another hassle !
