93 400E - Problems?
I have searched and reviewed all threads on 93 400E...my situation is that I am trying to decide on buying a 93 400E , owned and serviced by a MB german mechanic. Car has 148K miles, one owner, new tires, exterior is superb and overall supposedely great shape. Asking price is 10,000 dollars. Any typical class problems with this particular year or things to check out or ask?

you can entertain yourself for hours viewing the results of searches using these key words:
>W124 >a/c evaporator >M119 (motor) >wiring harness >throttle body actuator If the car is maintained to 'as-new' condition has factory engineered performance, Id think $10k is upper sales range and a fair selling price. hope this helps -fad |

I like the 94-95 years, cosmetically, they look more modern.

Drive it. In town, and especially on the highway. (while you're on the highway, stomp on it, and observe your eyes open, and your heartbeat go up)
Start it a couple of times....make sure that $%^%$ check engine light doesn't come on. If it does, negotiate the price big time (after having found the cause of the light) Be prepared to want to keep this car for a long time. (I also prefer the look of the '94 &'95's)

What's not to like- these are great used cars. My 94 E320 is 9 nine years old but drives and feels new. There are issues you MAY have to deal with that will frustrate you if you have to deal with a "check engine light," however the board is great help to sort these thing out. Fortunately, the actuator and wiring harness was replaced by the PO at Mercedes before I got my car. I still had a CE light problem a week after I bought the car which was fixed when I changed the spark plug connectors. But I must say, it ran like crap during this period.

Weaver - just remember that this is no Honda or Toyota. Be prepaired for some unexpected fixes to come up. If you keep this in mind I think you'll be really happy with this car. It's a very enjoyable car to drive and will continue to grow on you as the miles pass.

one more thought...
...you might want to check out the Featured Cars section on this site. It gives you a little more info on the 400E/E420

Have had our 93 400E for 7 years and 60,000 miles. FANTASTIC car. This thing still rips like when we bought it. Have never had a CE light on and the problems we have had were unusual and fixed by the dealer, even out of warranty. This is one great car.

Weaver,
Good car...especially if the harness is changed. Look, I was no mechanic when I bought my car... but I've been able to fix MANY things myself with the help of folks on this board. I'd like to think I've contributed a bit myself. Regardless, you may want to price out some 94-95 E420's. I think you can get one for nearly the same as that '93.

If it checks out ok and seems to be in decent shape I would certainly go for it. I have had mine for a few years now and I absolutely love it. The performance is outstanding and the ride is smooth and firm. And it still does 140 mph with no problems! The fastest I have had mine up to is 150 though...
