'95 E420
HI everyone; I have a small problem with my '95 E420. After the engine reaches norm. op. temp. The idle fluctuates from 1k-1500rpm's down to nothing(has died on occasion)This happens only at start up.w/ a warm engine. After 30-40 sec. after the rpm's calm down and become stable it runs fine for as long as I need it to.until I turn it off and restart a couple of minutes later. It did this last summer, and not at all during the fall and winter. When this summer heated up, the problem returned. Also the engine temp.is getting too high.almost 120c in the summer and in traffic only.So if I hit traffic jams I have to turn off the a/c.What can I do to get it to run cooler, and will that take care of the idle problem.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can't help you with the idle problem, but I know there is a mod to the fan clutch that is written up in the Stu Ritter "124" Bible book that fixes the over-heating issue on the 420's. The book is awesome. If you don't already have it, it's a must-have in the collection......

Joe,
You need to check your front fans and make sure they are working. Do a search on this site, as there is is a wealth of info on how to test them. You'll see the 2 fans in front of the radiator when hood is open. If these don't work, you'll definately run hot. |
Clean the EA out and retry it for stable idle. I've seen 'em get gummy and stick a bit.

Thanks Guys; JoeP,sry to sound stupid but what is "EA"?

Also sometimes called throttle actuator or throttle body. Try a search for these words and see what comes up. There is a lot in the archives (if you have the time. And the patience). |
