Now that I have replaced the actuators with complete units, I am asking if the actuators is rebuildable. When I finished, I was looking at one of the old units and noticed that the rubber diaphrams appeared to be held in place by a snap ring. Removing the ring, I was able to remove the worn diaphrams and clean up the body.

Can just the diaphrams be purchased to rebuild the unit? If so, then I could rebuild the two I pulled out, and have low cost spares handy for the next time.

Thanks.

Mike,

I've seen the diaphragms in Impco's Performance Products catalog for Mercedes. You can request a catalog at http://www.************************/ordermercedes.asp I've not ordered any of their parts yet, but they list what looks like this model diaphragm for $6.95 each. (They have a little trouble with terminology, as they also call the complete actuator a "diaphragm", but the price there is $66.05.) Since they have them, others are bound to as well. Let us know what you find; I will need to do this soon myself. My D is now limping along on two patched door lock diaphragms that I "McGuiver'd" tothether using a similar size diaphragm from surplus, some wire, and some silicone sealant.

If you really want to save some money notice that two of the diaphrams will be nearly new on each 4 diaphram servo. Only replace the cracked ones.

As the inside of the door is outside of the car (rain water goes through it). The upper diaphrams weather crack while the lower ones don't. (BTW all models got rid of these exposed diaphrams around 1980).

The $66 price for complete units sounds pretty steep to me (is this place supposed to be discount?). Many of these mail order retailers are just that - retailers. Prices on aftermarket parts that approach MB list, pretty good game.

We have used the single replacement diaphrams for years but they are now only on 20 year old vehicles and we have quit stocking them.

66 is about 10 dollars more than what I paid at www.thebenzbin.com, $56.00 and change, a complete unit, including the push rod. Since the local MB shop wanted about $60 just for the vacuum body, I didn't feel bad buying the whole unit.

Now I can see about ordering some rubbers, and I can rebuild the ones I pulled out, and have good spares for the next time.

I know what you mean about the elements Steve. The right rear, was soooo bad, the upper body was full of water (washed the car the night before), and the lower rubber was really dry rotted. I found the window stop tabs were bent down a few degrees, which allowed the windor rail to make contact. The is what rubbed the hole to begin with. The tabs have been straightened, and the window does not make contact - for now. Looks like 27 years of rolling up and down took it's toll as well.
