engine and trans removal

Hi,

I am getting ready to take the engine out of my 88 190e 2.3. But I see I need to take it out with the trans attached. Does anyone know what needs to be removed in order for the trans to come free of the vehicle?

The speedo cable, mounts and gear shifter i assume? Also, how does one go about separating the gear shift from the transmission anyway?

Thanks very much,

Josh

Gear shift from the tranny is the easy part:). Once you climb underneath and look around the tranny you can see the connections. There is a "linkage" attached that you have to remove the clamp fastener and then pry the linkage off. There is a wiring connection that you have to turn the "outer" ring about 1/4 turn and then unplug the connector. Remove the rear most tranny crossmember support from the frame and tranny and then the rear flex disc. I always remove the radiator and the oil cooler just to keep them from being damaged. You will need an angle adjustment adapter between the lift and the engine because it will be tilted at around 45 degrees with the tranny down to clear when it comes out. Take your time.

Thanks a lot Jim.

So basically I am looking at:

- gear shift - disconnect at the trans linkage.
- electrical connector
- transmission support crossmember
- rear flex disc
- speedo cable

Then the trans is free from the vehicle?

2 follow up questions.

- isnt the rear flex disc between the driveshaft and rear diff? So does the entire driveshaft come out with the trans or can I disconnect it at the trans via the front flex disc?

-How high will the car need to be jacked up to attain enough clearance to tilt the trans/motor assembly for removal?

Thanks again.

Josh

Josh:

You will also need to disconnect all the engine stuff, too! Electrics, fuel lines, remove AC compressor and set aside, etc.

You won't need to jack the car except maybe to remove the front flex disc coupling (leave the drive shaft in the car, although it is easier to drop it down at the center bearing and wire it up out of the way).

Engine and tranny come out the front, you will have to tilt it up without moving forward much (to about 45 degrees) until you can get the oil pan over the radiator support.

Once the oil pan is clear, push the car back as you tilt the engine/transmission assembly level. Watch that you don't snag the steering damper or any wires, etc as the tranny comes up.

Push the car back from underneath the engine and lower the engine down to near the ground before you attempt to move the engine puller, else you may tip it over.

Thanks a lot guys!!

by the way, the hoses from the ac compressor go up and were attached to the head. I unbolted them but they seem pretty stiff. When I pull the engine will it clear the hoses ok, or after I unbolt the compressor will they move some?

Thanks,

Josh

Make sure you have someone out there helping out when you do it. You can push the a/c hoses out of the way enough to clear. It is the front flex disk that has to be removed. It is between the front of the driveshaft and the rear of the tranny. Don't forget to remove the oil pressure sensing line. I usually just disconnect the powersteering pump and lay it over out of the way too. Make sure you disconnect the starter too.
