Sluggish shifter mechanism 87 300E
My shifter sometimes is slow (2-3 sec) to complete a manual upshift from 3 to D. There is the waiting and a small "clunk" sound in the shifter column then the trans immediatly makes the upshift. It's like something need lubrication in the shifter mechanism. What is the correct way to lube it, if it is supposed to be lubed? I thought about Moly motorcycle chain spray lube in a pressure can, but where should I squirt it.
Anyone have experience along these lines? Help would be appreciated. Luck to you, DanielW 300E 87 196500 miles , AC is a little weak, (R-134a converted) Trans leaks a little , USES no engine oil in a 3-4K change period !! |

The external operation of the shift mechanism is real straight forward. If you are not finding the gear I would look to shift bushings and play. If the mechanical position of the gear selector moves and the trans doesn't shift I would look to control pressure cable adjustment or would need some more info.

If you hear it or feel it click then immediatly shift, I'd suspect the shift rod bushing on the transmission. Quick way to check is to push the shifter a little bit past D -- if it works immediatly, the bushing is gone. The click is when the tranny lever moves to the detent, it's not being pushed all the way into the correct position by the linkage, and won't upshift until the lever moves the rest of the way by itself.
