1975 350 SLC won't start

This 8-cyl euro model has points which, when open, show a reading of 12 volts across. So far, so good. Problem is, they also show no resistance across the open points, which is bad. If I remove the lead from the condenser, the needle on the multimeter drops back down to zero where it belongs when the points are open. The lead from the condenser goes to a black box on the driver side fender of the engine compartment which is filled with what appear to be resistors. Does anyone know what this is, what it does, how I can end up with a short to ground in this thing, and what I can do to fix it? Oh, and the winning lottery numbers, while you're at it. Thanx, Ron

The EFI v8s had point triggered transistor switching devices. If both sides of the points are always grounded, it sounds like a switching unit problem unless the wiring in between is shorted. Disconnect the lead from the distributer where it attaches to the switching box and check. If the switching unit is bad I would replace it with an aftermarket optically triggered system. The whole unit can be had for 150.
