Question Info for ' 73 450SE, please?

For some reason I don't seem to be finding an owner's manual or shop manual for my new MB...

I see 350/450SL manuals are available but not for the S-Class.

Anyone out there with info, maybe a print of the 1973 Maintenance Schedule? Do these babies really take a valve adjustment?

I'm also looking for a replacement driver's interior door panel in tan, or any suggestions as to a way to repair a half dollar-sized cracked area (just where you would put your elbow). I'm also looking at a rear seat panel with a tear: it looks like www.************************ has all kinds of replacement seat upholstery for the W126 Series but I'm not finding a catalogue for ' 73-? S-Class. Would other year rear seat pads/covers, etc. fit?

Thanks in advance for any kind consideration!

p.s. Does 30+ years qualify as a "classic" in MB-dom?

You are looking for a W116 chassis manual. They are less common that the W107 (350/450 SL) manuals since the W107 is not only a cult classis, but was sold from 1972 to 1992.

Valve adjustments were required on the M117 engine before 1976, when hydraulic ajusters were installed.

A good vinyl repair kit can be used on the door to fix the cracked spot.

Check for W116 seat covers, they should be available in the usual places. Knowing the chassis type will help.

The W116, while a very nice car, is getting somewhat rare these days. They had a distressing tendency to rust, and the older models with D-Jetronic are harder and more expensive to maintain than the later K-jetronic ones. They are considered classics by most of the people on this forum!

Exclamation Rust?

This car is a garage-kept, 1-Owner Oregon car (no salt on the roads) and was driven down to Arizona, only occasionally...

I did notice some dirt inside the gas cap door area, but it doesn't appear to be actually rust. Is there a spray that would neutralize (?) anything going on in there?

Door panels, hood area, trunk and footwells are all dry. I didn't see a speck of rust on any of the panels or fenders.

The previous owner just had a valve adjustment, new belts & hoses, a complete new distributor ($600, he said!) assy. installed, cap, plugs, wires, rotor & condensor, a/c, coolant & tranny services done... Tires and brakes within 3-5K.

What is the valve adjustment interval, anyway?

I'm in Heaven!

You got a good one, and they are lovely cars when everythings works.

Just clean and wax the filler door area unless you actually think it is rust. In that case, it needs some conversion (etching) primer and some new paint.

Valve adjust interval is 15,000 or 30,000 miles. Good thing is that they don't wear much, unless the oiler tube fittings get broken, in which case it is a camshaft rather than valves!

Question "Oiler tube fittings"?

Peter - What are these babies? Something that can be preventively replaced prior to failure?

15 or 30K valve adjustment interval is based upon what variable? Engine model or year, type of service?

Thanks for your consideration!

The valve adjustment interval is depending upon my faulty memory -- 15,000 is the interval for diesels, and I cannot remember if the gassers are different or not.

They don't wear much, it's not a huge problem. PITA to adjust, though you MUST use a special crow-foot wrench that is ground flat on the bottom, or you round off the adjuster, requiring that you remove the rocker arm to make adjustments. Hydraulic tappets are so much nicer....

The cam is oiled by a steel tube alongside, held onto the cam towers by plastic inserts. The inserts get hard and brittle, so ANY time you mess about with them, replace the plastic bits. The cam will go very fast with no oil .... !

Check the oiling by running the engine for a short time any time you have the valve covers off, making sure you see oil dripping onto the cam from the oil tubes. Don't rev it, you will spray oil everywhere!

Thumbs up Thanks, again, Peter!

I'm still hoping I can find an owner's manual, shop manual, etc.
as that valve adjustment interval may be the only one I'm still hazy on...

Cheers!
