Trade 6.9 For A 500e?
what do you think.?
i have a 1979 6.9 in cherry condition with 50k miles. i have an opportunity to trade it for a cherry 1993 500e with 30k miles. i am torn. i like the 6.9. but i like the 500e. i would like to have both, but i am out of garage space. my feeling is that i should prefer the more modern car. all ears..... |

Well , the 6.9 is a classic. You could probably find other 500E but I doubt if you'll find a 6.9 with 50K and condition that you're describing ur's is in. Moving forward your 6.9 is bound to appreciate in value as a classis same could be said about the body style. while the 6.9 is disctinctive, let's face it the 500E shares the same body style of any other W124 of which you can find thousands out there.
But at the end I suggest you should figure out whether you need the car for fun/ or show purpose. for fun i'm sure 500E would do. but to keep a classis. well. that's another story. good luck eiter way |

The 500E is worth about 20 grand, look around and see what you can buy a 6.9 for. I have three of them, one has 43K on it and the other has 48K, both near perfect cars and one with 65K that isn't as nice, more of a driver. I wouldn't sell either one of the nice ones for 20 grand.
The 500E will be worth 10 grand in a few years after you put some miles on it but the 6.9's will still be worth over 20. |

Albert,
I just realized. you mentioned the problem you're facing is not the dollar figure, it's the garage space that you've run out of ! well then just buy a car cover and keep the 500E on the street. atleast you wont have to bother with the debate of which one to keep ! |

I find the 124 body car dull. A mint 6.9? How often do you see one of those???
I have owned a 116 300SD, and currently have a 400E. The 116 car was more fun and that was with a DIESEL. Note - I dont have to go fast to have fun! By the way - you mention you have 2 126 cars, what is the reason for holding onto them over the 6.9? Mike |

the 116's were pretty nifty. the best at the time. but as an aficionado, the 126's were the improvements of the breed, that i feel have not been improved since.
better seats[more legroom, more adjustability], better climate control, better parts availability insofar as 6.9 is concerned. also better looking. did you ever see the bumper that the feds imposed on the 6.9? better tranny. all in all, i consider the 560's to be the zenith of 20th century car design and construction. i think i am correct when i say that these were bruno sacco's firsts as head of m-b design. he never topped them in my view. i keep the two that i bought new in 1986 because there has never been any reason to divest myself of them. i wouldn't have added a e320cab except that i stumbled into a 1995 version that had never been titled, never driven and it was in my colors. and i consider it another design triumph by sacco. however, day in day out, i prefer driving the 560's[sel, sec]. fwiw |

If you like the look of the W124 then you can't go wrong with the 500E. It has a muscular look with all the right curves, unbelievable power, great handling, superb build quality and every option you could need. Parts are readily available from any dealership and other than the tight engine bay it isn't difficult to work on.
If you haven't had a chance you should take the car for a test drive and determine if you like it. You'll know if you do or don't. 500's are getting very rare in good condition and eventually they will be as scarce as the 6.9 but if your buying the car as an investment don't waste your time, it's too early and the used car market is very soft. Let me know if you have any specific questions about the car, I would be happy to answer them.

For the 500E, from 1992 -1994 they only sold 1505 units(in the US). They were specially assembled by Porsche, had 16 inch wheels, flared fenders, W126 suspensions components for stability, and super strong brakes. That makes the 500E a very exclusive car.
I'd imagine that the value of one of these cars will appreciate fairly well over time. But, (groan) Don't get rid of the 6.9! The W116 body is basically a W126 with more chrome and less rust resistance(it's even more like a W123 though). The 6.9 is irreplaceable, and you would be kicking yourself in the butt if you got rid of it. Besides, it would be too hard to get used to MPG again when you've been measuring the 6.9's fuel economy by GPM, and how fast the gas gauge needle shot closer to empty when you floored it, anyway.
