Brake pad retaining pin slipping out
After replacing front pads and rotors on my 94 SL320, I noticed some of the brake pad retaining pins are backing out after 50-200 miles. I thought they were tapped in all the way and were seated flush?.. Even replaced one with a new pin/lock collar... It backed out as well? Should I spread the lock collars out slightly? Apply Lock-Tite?

Now this is a new one! I've never seen an ATE/Bendix retainer pin come out in the nearly 30 years I've done this type of brakes. They usually rust in place pretty good.
However, anything is possible. If they won't stay in, even with a new pin, I'd suspect the caliper bore is funny. Clean it out, make sure there isn't a bunch of corrosion in there, and try again. You might also want to replace the anti-rattle spring -- if it is warped or bent, it may not apply any pressure to the pin, so there is nothing to hold it in place. You can also try Locktite on the small end as well as the locking end, but I'm not sure it will withstand the heat from serious braking. Peter

When you replaced one, did you replace it with one that "looks" like the old one? I am wondering if someone upgraded your front calipers and you are going to the parts department asking for the original part when you should actually be requesting a different one. In other words you have the wrong pins. The other possibility of course is the holes in your calipers have been enlarged for some wild reason. I am with Peter on this one, never have I seen these pins come out on their own. Are you sure they are installed flush with the caliper surface? I often use an end of a rachet extension and tap them into place. I then use my finger to confirm the head's flush fit. Haasman
