lamp defective

my 99' e300td has been displaying "lamp defective" in the message center. The lamp that is not functioning is the drivers side small headlight. Not the big one, but the smaller one beside it. I replaced the bulb and it did not fix the problem. To be sure that I didn't buy a bad bulb, i switched it with the bulb on the other side. Still, it is not working. Any ideas what could be causing this, or what my next troubleshooting step should be? Thanks.

Did you check the fuses? I think there is a fuse for that light. The fuses for pretty much all exterior and interior lights are located on the left outboard side of the dash (drivers side). Just pop off the cover and the fuse block with the fuse layout/designation will be right there.

Fuse is good. Any other ideas? There is some round black thing below that bulb, but i'm not sure what it is, or if its bad.

There are 2 bulbs in the small round light (clearance light). The upper one is the high bam i believe and the one below that one is the one for the running lamp (clearance lamp). Did the light that was removed look like a normal headlamp bulb?

The smaller bulb is a 6 watt, larger (highbeam) is 55 watt. There is a TSB on those connectors. If you have access to ALLDATA.DIY you can see the TSB, as there is a repair kit. If you dont have access send me a PM and I will email you the TSB
