I just called my MB dealer to ask about purchasing lubricant for my sticking sun roof and they want $53.00. The MB part number for the recommended lubricant is 001 989 46 51 for a small supply. After searching this forum and other MB forums, it looks like everyone else pays about $20 – 30ish for the lubricant.

Can someone tell me where else I might look to purchase the 001 989 46 51 sun roof lube?

You mean to tell me that your local auto parts store has nothing comprable to the MB stuff to 'lube' the sun roof tracks. I'm a huge fan of sunroofs, had them in almost all of my vehicles(including half a dozen MB's)and have always kept the tracks clean and lubed with a bit of bearing grease-applied with a small brush or WD40, never had any problems, ever.

I know, MB is going to tell us that using anything else besides their 'Sun Roof Lube' that the tracks will fail and render the sunroof junk in a matter of months, right?

I got reamed at the dealer when I purchased the gasket sealant for the cam solenoid...$60 !

Yeah, find another outlet!

The dealer was probably quoting for a big tub - don't think they sell this in small packages. Plus the usual 200% mark-up of course.

For what it's worth, I bought the tub (about the size of a can of beens) for a little less, because I got a discount from my MB parts guy.
They asked me to open it up when I picked it up so they could see how it looked like. MB dealer obviously wasn't using it and I must have been the first who had bought it.
It looks a little bit like very fine translucent lard and it is good for anything that slides like door hinges, sliding windows etc. You can operate them with a broken finger...

Though I have no objective data for comparison, it also appears to be fairly resistant to picking up air borne dirt. I used to remove the s/r and clean the rails annually and now do so every two years - same climate, usage, etc., and I use the s/r every chance I get. Before switching 10 years ago, I was using heavy duty Valvoline EP grease.

Sounds like Reinhardt is using it on everything in sight...which is what happens when you get the 250 year supply!

Do not use bearing grease, lithium grease, etc on your sunroof.

I have always used silicone grease on sunroof tracks.
No problems.

From what i saw on the can at the dealer, it is composed of surfactants and glycerin. And the surfactant mix is a trade secret if the dealer wants $60 for it!

If I didn't have a supply of the MB sunroof grease my next choice would be silicone grease. I also use the sunroof grease on the window regulators whenever I take a door panel off for the first time.

If you have trouble finding a small economical quantity of this MB grease from Fastlane, George Murphy, or whoever then give Rusty a call (1-800-741-5252) as I'm sure he has it economically repacked in small containers.

The label mentions fatty acid esters and some other stuff I don't remember (I borrow the can my mechanic bought six or seven years ago when I need some). It's really almost a dry lubricant, and I suspect using anything else is a bad idea.

The last 2 digits in the part number indicates the size of the container when you are dealing with a MB supplied lubricant or other service product like this. i believe they just need to find out what number to use for a smaller tube of it, the $20 quantity. Maybe one of these guys can check out what the last 2 numbers are for the tube of it, usually it's a 10 or a 20.
