New squealing rear brakes on '90 W-126
 

I purchased new rotors and brake pads for the rear of my 1990 300SE. Before the installation I never had a brake squeal problem in the 120,000 I have had my car. I purchased the Rear Brake Discs Made by Balo and PBR Brake Pad Set Metal Master. Now the brake squeal is un bearable and ear piercing.
I applied red Napa anti-squeal grease to all four rear brake pad backings. It stopped the squeal for about 350 miles and now it is back. Is there something I can do to prevent this or do I have to buy new pads?
Any suggestions?

i think you may have a cracked rotor.

Toss the PBR pads and put in Textars. Blessed silence.

Aftermarket pads squeal like crazy on rear brakes.

If you are really attached to those pads, pull them, completely clean the slot in the caliper, and coat the rear and sides of the backing plate with antiseize. Put a tiny spot on the contact point of the antirattle spring and the pads, too, as well as where the pins run.

If this doesn't work you are going to have to go back to OEM pads.

If you put metal masters in the back but not the front they will squeal like a pig!

Also when you buy PBR pads (rear only) they do not come with shims, you have to purchase aftermarket shims. The front ones you purchase come with shims but not the rear...its annoying.

Wagner makes the shims Part# SH10015.

I may have a set at home that I can send you regular mail (they're real thin and light), if I remember I ordered two sets by mistake. I'll check later.


Oh by the way Pagid, Textar all come with shims attached to their rear pads I just have an anal problem with dust:).

Pagid and Textar are the OEM brand names.

They come with an anti-squeal coating on them (the black stuff isn't paint).

This will very likely cure the squeal.

Thanks everyone for your help. I can't believe that the PBR pads need a shim and it is not included with them. Yal, if you find that extra set of shims I will take you up on your offer. I can send you money for your trouble.
Will the shims really cure the problem?
I will try them but if they don't I guess I am going to change the PBR's out and chalk it up as a learning experience. I guess I should have searched here first.

Does that "fix" also cure brake squeal while backing the car up?

It should.

However, the pistons are directional in ATE calipers -- they are set so that the pads won't squeal going forward, so they may going backward with no easy cure.

OEM pads squeal the least, but nothing is perfect.

the Volvo 740s were plagued with front brakes (usually the Griling) and screamed to beat the band. So bad a friend of mine said the border crossing guards in Europe used to stick their fingers in their ears when they drove up --- never did fix it completely.

One thing that helps is to get the caliper slots completely clean when putting in new pads. This allows them to sit square -- dirt under one side can let the get crooked, and boy oh boy, will they screech!

cam69ss I have the shims in my trunk and I just got the car back from a motor mount fiasco, send me an address and I'll throw them in the mail for you. Get some anti squeel paste, the blue stuff. Try the shims out see if they help ok.

yal is one heck of a nice guy, sent me the shims at no cost. I offered him
money
but wouldn't accept any.
For future reference they are Wagner p/n SH1001-5

I installed them and used Napa red anti-squeal coating on the backside
of
the shim facing the caliper pistons. Has been about a month now
without any
squeal or noise.
