Motor Mount Vibration question. ADVICE PLZ

Hi,

Need your input please.

when i start to drive, up to 8 MPH car vibrates. and than it goes away. To describe the vibration, it sounds like
"BuRR BuRR":p .

Here are some facts.
1. Opened hood, 1 foot on the brake and 1 one the gas, car being in D, I press gas and notice Left side engine goes up 3-5 inches. When I put in R it only goes up 2-3 Inches.

I think my motor mount is causing the Vibration.

Or do you think my Tranny Mount is bad, I dont know how to check them without lifting the car?

1998 E 320 74k

Please Advise.

Thanks:eek:

the fact that your enginge is torquing over by 3-5 inches should be enough of an indication that there is a prolem with your motor mount(s). Unfortunately the BEST way to check them is to jack up the car and visually inspect them from underneath.

These mounts are hydraulic and contain oil to assist in the vibration damping. There is a steel dome on the top and a rubber housing below that. the rubber contains hydraulic oil and the bottom of the mount is a steel platethat's moulded into the rubber. quite often the rubber will crack around the bottom plate and collapse by allowing all the oil to drain out. This usually occurs on the exhaust side first due to the heat.

My 91 300E had a bad vibration too. Waiting at stop lights I thought I might be shaked right out the window... A couple hours combing throught the archives lead me to zero in on the motor mounts. I order them from FastLane and replaced them myself - a fairly simple procedure which has been covered in many threads. Replacing the motor mounts was the best bang for the buck repair I've done so far on my car. The diffrence with new mounts was amazing, so much so I had to drive around for the next couple days with the stero off to make sure the engine was in fact running... smoooth.

Cheers for now

You're not kidding! Same here!:D

The passenger side engine mount of my car raised up the same height. The mount rubber was worn from its metal. I had both changed.
The engine idle was transmitted through the car and made the idle much worse than it actually was  When on the go it was reduced to a vibration almost like a hum except you could feel it.

The easiest way to determine if your motor mounts are bad is to place the gear selecter in to "P" There should be little to no vibration. Next shift into "D", if the mounts have deteriorated this is where you'lle feel the vibrations. The reason for no vibrations in P has something to do with the engine applying torque to the transmission, you'lle have to dig into the archives to find out more.

As for the transmission mount, run throught the gears with your foot on the brake, if the shift selecter moves alot while the tranny gears up/down tranny mount needs replacing.

Hope this helps you to troubleshoot your problem.
