Can barely stick my head in there. Didn't see anything like the relay I have in my hand. I doubled checked and it is the proper relay. There was even a photo of it. Can someone please point out which one if the fuel pump relay? Or directions as to where to put my hand to find it?

Your picture you posted I believe is looking from "under" the dash looking up. You need to remove the glovebox to access the fuel pump relay, and go through the hole the missing glovebox gives you. Gilly |

No sweat, Steve.
Just to clarify, you just need to remove the "box" part of the glovebox, the inner part, not the lid or cover. There are I thing 4 push in type fastners that secure the "box" into the dash, then you can pull the box out of the dash and have access to the FP and Klima relays. Gilly |

Steve,
Been there done that. Just to add to Gilly's instructions, the relays are against the firewall and the fuel pump relay doesn't look like the little silver one from the 450. It is a black box to the far left and right behind the idle speed relay. You need to pull the idle speed relay first an the the fuel pump relay. Good luck. Peter

Got it back together, it feels like I have 30% more power could the bad relay give low voltage causing the pump to put out less pressure? Thank you guys. Steve

More pictures and how I got the relay swapped out
Question: Too bad this didn't fix my problem. The car stalls while turning right. I'm working my way through the fuel system. I started with the fuel filter as it was only $12. The relay was around $40. Next is either the accumulator or the two fuel pumps. If anybody has any suggestions for which would be best to tackle next, please chime in. I am leaning towards the accumulator as that's one part (and I think cheaper than the two fuel pumps combined).
I found this forum via The Google and thought I'd add some more pictures...and I description of how I was able to swap out the fuel pump relay. For my '87 560SL I emptied the glove box and found a ~5-inch diagonal access panel I could remove. This gave me access to see the area where the relay is located. Since I went the same route as another poster and removed the panels below the glove box already, I pulled the HVAC conduit out as well, which gave me tons of room to access the relay. I did not have to take the glove "box" out. The total job took me under 30 minutes if you don't include the time to contort my body into the footwell. (I think it took another 30 minutes to extract myself and then straighten my back again. ;-) With one hand through the access panel I was able to reach the idle speed relay first. By reaching up from below with my other hand, I could gain better leverage in order to pull the idle speed relay and then the fuel pump relay out. Make sure to remember the orientation of both in order to more easily reinsert them. Glove Box Access Panel (X marks the spot) Here's a link to the image: Glove Box Access Panel Conduit I Removed: The Relay I Remove (yes, it had tape on it!): |
