T-Stat installation on 603 engine

Is there a gasket other than the rubber o-ring on the T-stat element that goes between the cover and the body? When I put the element between, it's kinda loose so I think that water would seep between the cover and the body. ANy suggestions?

Typically there is a seal which attached to the periphery of the tstat.

Can anyone send me a picture if the T-Stat element has some sort of rubber seal or something. The T-stat I have is all metal.

If you look at the top half of the t-stat housing, you'll see a tapered flange. This pushes down on the o-ring and mashes it into the top rim of the t-stat. If you want to be a beliver like St. Thomas, put it back together and stick your finger into the neck of the housing. The t-stat should not move around unless it's not the correct part for your application. O-ring is all that should be there as far as I know..

Let me expalin this in more detail:

cover: is the aluminum cover where the lower radiator hose is attached to and has a notch to guide the t-stat properly

body: Aluminum part bolted to the block where the water pump is screwed onto.

- A rubber o-ring lies between the cover and the T-stat. My problem is that there is nothing in between the T-stat and the body. Take note that the T-stat is a bit recessed into the cover (about 2-3mm). So when I bolt the "cover" to the "body" = it's aluminum against aluminum. I think water will definitely seep through here.

Is'nt there another o-ring between the T-stat and the body?

When I took out my old T-stat there was rubber on both ends. One facing the cover and body, but it seemed like the ruber was "one" piece.

Hope this helps. I tried again to install it but it's really aluminum against aluminum. Even how tight I screw the bolts.

This is the part number that says "gasket" 601 203 00 76

Can anyone look this up if this is just an ordinary O-ring or a special gasket that wraps around the T-stat.

Francis, the thermostat you got is probably for a 617 engine. The original t'stat for a 603 has one temp setting (88C I think / not sure), and has an indentation for alignment on to the notched housing.

And as Chris Haney mentioned, it has a rubber seal attached to its periphery, and does not use an o-ring seal.

Thanks Jake! I'll check again. The T-stat I got was for a 601 - they said it was the same for my engine. Here's the part number if any of you guys wanna check: 601 200 00 15

This one is 85 degress.
