How do you diagnose a bad shock

Assuming that your car does not fail the bouce test, and the shock is not leaking, can it still be a candidate for replacement? How would one diagnose it?
Thanks in advance
farrukh

ps. car is 190E Sportline with 83k miles

if a shock is not leaking, and passes the bounce test, then it is possible for it to still be faulty,-i had this scenario on a previous audi, the car would have a knocking sound from the front end while driving on rough ground ,which had the faulty shock-replacement resulted in curing the problem.
