At first I was expecting a trouble-free MB. Now, at 2,500 miles trouble 1. The other night, Check Coolant Level! displays on the E55. Engine temp is slightly warmer than normal (about 95). I press the wrench button for help. After waiting about 10 minutes I get connected to a tech (with a poor connection) who tells me to continue home and MB would contact me. Someone actually called back! Sent a tech to the house at 11 PM. Coolant level was OK, so the sensor was assumed to be the culprit. Next day, my dealer calls to get me in for service. Got a C230 Kompressor for the day. Quite a car, nice hiway cruiser-hums along at 90MPH! They find no problem, coolant level OK, Sensor OK, so they reset the computer, no problem found. Anyone ever experience this situation?

At least 5-10 times. The coolant level & w/washer reservoir sensor are in series & if either sensor has a short or open circuit the coolant level warning will come on. Try disconnecting the w/washer sender & watch the MIL lamp come on.

OK, I'll bite. Does that mean that if W/washer fluid is low, I'll get a low coolant message? After all, low coolant or W/washer sensors just open the circuit when the system is low, right? I hope the system knows the difference between the two. Thanks for your responses!

DDDDDDUUUUUUUHHHHH!!!
That's too funny. I've never had the coolant sensor go bad, it has always been the washer sensor, and I have seen alot of them go out on the new c-class cars. John. |

------------------ Please let me know when you find a 6 year old vehicle ( any make ), that does not exhibit some MINOR electronic glitch, now and then. I'll be first in line to buy it.

I agree with Manny.
But in reguard to the cluster interpreting which sensor. The ECL has a normal resistance of 105-120 ohms. The windshield wiper fluid level switch has a normal resistance of 145-185ohms. So with all levels OK the cluster sees from 250 - 305ohms for the series circuit. When either level goes low the switch shorts and goes to 0 ohms. Since the resistance is in series the resistance of the switch at proper level is left to be read. In other words if the ECL switch sees low coolant it goes to 0 ohms and the series circuit now reads 0 + 145 to 185 ohms. The cluster see the resistance and recognizes the coolant level is low. Another unique situation is where the sum total doesn't fit any of the situations. In this case a text display comes up stating something like "error in display".

So, it looks like the cluster can differentiate between the two but is the CHECK COOLANT light the only indication that one of the levels is low, i.e. with low washer level you get CHECK COOLANT?

Ok, do you want to buy my 96 Ford Ranger, has 84,ooo miles on it and never, ever had one problem with it, not a leak, squeek, or skip, keep it well maintained and don't beat it. Sorry, just kidding, not for sale, But I am going to build a hot rod out of it after my barracuda project is finished. Yes, I'm going to hack it up, remove the 4-cyl ,5-spd and put a small block v/8 between the fenders, on crack, maybe, but having fun with the torches. I will sell the original drive train though. It is currently my service truck see it here at http://home.bellsouth.net/p/PWP-Benzmobility Also look at my other projects ni photo album. Oh ,ps, replace the washer sensor. |

All I gotta say is...LUCAS.
The other thing to watch is the sensor colour...early one where white and then they went to black.....they do NOT interfit.....although MB will tell you they do. The different resistence between the 'coolant' and 'washer' make the correct light come on.Trouble is, as has been explained...the failing sensor will change resistence fooling the monitor. From the few I have repaired, it seems the default is COOLANT LOW. FWIW and FYI....Mice seem to like to chew the wiring under the plastic covers...and there's a ground post there too.....lift off the cover and check....they seem to like living in the HAVC system plenum. .
